Best Thing We Just Ate: Borek From Bread Lounge

There is a reason people are seeking out Bread Lounge, one of the more hidden bakeries on Downtown LA. First, owner and bread baker Ran Zimon has been selling his perfect baguettes to chefs like Walter Manzke for years. But it wasn't until Zimon opened the space surrounded by lofts and warehouses next to the LA River (you'll pass it on the way to Bestia) that you could taste the full spectrum of his creations: incredible croissants, chewy ciabatta, amazing artisan loaves, and borek, flaky pastry stuffed with feta and spinach or sausage, egg and peppers.

The boreks are hearty enough for a meal on their own - the spinach one is like spanikopita on steroids - or great with a cup of soup (today it's potato and leek, chock-full of potato chunks and certainly some ham or bacon). They come with a side of a cucumber yogurt sauce, which happens to be a perfect condiment for the spicy sausage and pepper borek. The place buzzes with activity during lunch, from local loft dwellers and artists to people, like us, who finally found a parking spot. We don't know how anyone can decide on what to get here; even the tuna sandwich sounds amazing.
