Barbecue Joint of the Day: Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que

To celebrate barbecue week, we’re highlighting a different barbecue restaurant outside of Austin each day. Zagat readers rounded up their five favorites here, but with so many awesome joints in the area, we have a few more in mind too.

The next restaurant to make the cut (fatty and lean) is Cooper’s. But which location? Choose from the place in New Braunfels, the Fort Worth Stockyards or the original in Llano. George W. Bush declared Cooper’s in Llano his favorite while he was in the Oval Office, and for a while it held the coveted No. 1 spot on Texas Monthly’s 50 best barbecue joints list too.

Though times have changed and Cooper’s has lost its prime spot on top lists, the restaurant still holds up to scrutiny. Like at all the best joints in the state, you pick your meat from the pit, and Cooper’s wraps it in paper for you. Brisket, ribs, sausage and enough sides and cobbler to set you back calorically for a few weeks. Sounds like lunch to us.
