"Tiffin at The Langham" is served in The Reserve lobby at The Langham, Boston.
Nothing like a proper English afternoon tea, and The Langham, Boston, is doing it right.

“Tiffin at The Langham” is now being served seven days a week at The Reserve, the recently opened lobby lounge in the luxury hotel. The menu and service echoes that of the original afternoon tea served in Europe at The Langham, London back in 1865.

And no, “tiffin” is not a misprint. The word comes from the English slang “tiffing,” which roughly means to take a little drink or sip and refers to a snack.

Guests get to choose from a selection of fine teas (The Langham Breakfast and English Flower among them) and receive savory finger sandwiches like the house-smoked salmon on Boston brown bread, and crème fraîche, egg and chive on brioche. Fresh cream scones served with traditional Devonshire clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd are the main event. Sweets round out the afternoon. If you’d like to add even more elegance, go with a Champagne tea - Maine lobster salad Mary Rose and a glass of Moët & Chandon champagne or Roeder Estate Rose. It’s all presented on custom-made Wedgwood china.

As the story goes (according to Langham press materials), “The luxurious ritual of Afternoon Tea was established in 1840 by Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford, who served it to ward off hunger pangs in the long hours between lunch and dinner. Her personal indulgence grew into an experience to be shared with her friends, and soon a tradition was born.” Amen (daily, 2-7 PM; 617-451-1900).
