Boulton & Watt chef David Rotter
Is there such thing as steampunk restaurants? If not, now there is. Boulton & Watt (5 Avenue A; 646-674-6004), named after the manufacturers of the steam engine, is inspired by the Industrial Revolution. Chef David Rotter (983, Norwood) pays homage to the era with twists on throwback dishes such as Scotch egg with béarnaise; and short rib and bone marrow toast in bordelaise. There’s also a “pickling station” featuring an array of fruits and veggies, including figs, pineapple, radish, Brussels sprouts and beets. Replacing Nice Guy Eddie’s in the East Village, the feel is defunct factory, with salvaged windows, repurposed furniture and a retro steam engine powering the restaurant’s belt-driven fan system. Tonight the restaurant goes full steam ahead with friends and family; it is scheduled to open to the public on January 8th.
