Former business occupying the upcoming Gennaro's space |
After closing in 2005, the Philadelphia offshoot of the iconic NYC pizzeria
Lombardi's will be returning on January 2 via a spinoff called Gennaro's Tomato Pie. According to
The Insider, Mike Giammarino, the operator of the former Rittenhouse location, will be manning the reboot, named after the original founder Gennaro Lombardi. Given the smaller South Philly digs, the menu will be kept concise, with a few thin-crust tomato pies, a few appetizers and salads, and housemade desserts like pineapple upside-down cake. As for decor, expect a family friendly, throwback feel featuring Formica tables and nostalgic tunes (starting 5 PM on January 2, Wednesdays-Sundays; 1429 Jackson St.).
