Sweet Caroline's Scores Ballpark-Inspired Cocktail Menu

You have Sox tickets in one hand, a cheap draught in the other. You’re unsatisfied. That’s understandable. A night at Fenway shouldn’t automatically mean you’re stuck drinking bad beer.

Good news: on Monday, July 1 (in time for next week’s games) a new cocktail program is launching at Sweet Caroline’s, a Fenway ‘hood bar not previously renowned for super ambitious tippling. But Noon Inthasuwan, the industry-fave mixologist who previously brought her magic touch to Central Square restaurant Moksa and its club component, Naga, has revamped its menu with ball park-inspired cocktails. They include the Off My Shoulders, a gin-based drink with honey syrup that has a touch of mustard, the Sweet Caroline, a Manhattan-ish cocktail with Cracker Jack-infused whiskey, and the Good Times, a spicy vodka gimlet with a dash of hot sauce. Want something simpler? There’s the Battery Cup (pictured), a rye cocktail with refreshing elderflower liqueur and sherry.

Fenway-inspired drinks, steps from the ballpark? Homerun, even if you wind up stumbling to the plate.

Jessica Koslow expanding Sqirl
Amdurheads (sure, we said it) are pretty excited for this news: After closing his Hollywood wine bar last year, Lou Amdur, biodynamic and natural wine advocate and all around wine geek, plans to open a new market next to Sqirl in Silver Lake. And get this - no bottle of wine will be more than $25.

According to the LA Times, Lou's Wine and Provisions will carry bread, cheese, pickles, preserves and even charcuterie that Sqirl's Jessica Koslow and team will make themselves, canned fish and meat, condiments and more. "We’ll stock most but perhaps not all of the fixings to make a dinner," Amdur tells the LAT. Koslow's kitchen basically separates the two, so the cafe will have to close on August 1 for a couple weeks for construction - she alluded to this and a "surprise" a couple months ago - but expect to see the restaurant and store back open by August 16.

The Round Rock Bee Keeper
Bourbon is a big deal, y’all. Last month we included the brown spirit on our list of the hottest cocktail trends in Austin, and this month Jack Allen’s Kitchen has added an entire bourbon cocktail menu to its bar.

The drinks feature Eagle Rare’s 10-Year-Old Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey as well as other great whiskeys, such as local Rebecca Creek Spirit Whiskey and TX Blended Whiskey from Firestone and Robertson Distillery Co. in Fort Worth. In Eagle Rare you’ll find notes of toffee, orange peel, herbs, honey, leather and oak. Housemade mixers like Round Rock honey-fig syrup enhance the spirit even further.

We’re excited to try the Round Rock Bee Keeper with Rebecca Creek Whiskey, Luxardo maraschino liqueur, honey-fig syrup and baked apple bitters, as well as the the Buffalo Trace Bourbon Smash, with Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon, Domain de Canton ginger liqueur, muddled orange, Chinese bitters and soda.

And whether you live north or south, you’re in luck: the summer menu is in place at both the Oak Hill and Round Rock locations. (Photo courtesy Austin Fusion Magazine)

Boba Tea Drinks Resurging in Popularity

Tpumps opened on Irving Street in the Sunset back in March, but there is still a line out the door every day for milk teas and boba drinks, despite the fact that there are at least three other busy places to get similar beverages within a two-block radius. We stopped in right as it opened at 11 AM and were advised that this is pretty much the only time when you don't have to wait behind what feels like a nightclub's velvet ropes. The Mission District now has a chance to savor the flavor of the hype now that the Boba Guys have officially opened their own shop at 3491 19th Street. Whereas a lot of the Sunset shops use Coffee Mate and imported mysterious boba balls, the Guys employ Strauss organic milk and organic Five Mountains tea. They're also making almond jelly if the balls aren't your taste.

Everyone's favorite serial killer returns to Showtime for his eight and final season of mass murders. To celebrate the season premier of Dexter, Magnolia Bakery created a particularly bloody cupcake. The Dexter cupcake ($4.00) is a red velvet cupcake topped with whipped vanilla icing, caramel "blood" and sugar "glass" shards. It will be available in stores though Sunday.

Well, after all that barbecue, it's time for dessert. Master preserver and frozen treat maven Karen Klemens just rolled out her first batch of fresh organic peach ice cream at Sierra Madre's Mother Moo Creamery, and since it's so bloody hot out there right now, it sounds (and looks) just perfect. If you haven't been to the shop, or the cute little foothill village, this weekend is as good a time as any, especially if you head up for a shady hike up to Sturtevant Falls.

Brisket from Mighty Quinns in NYC
You got your hands dirty this week by digging into our barbecue coverage and that's OK - as our first-ever 'cue survey found that licking your fingers post-rib is perfectly acceptable. It wasn't all about Texas vs. Carolina though, our readers clearly have a lot of love for Alice Waters because the only non-'cue related article on our list was about the reopening of her famed Chez Panisse. PETA Releases "Broccoli Obama" Shirt After Favorite Food Quote

President Obama recently told some kid reporters that his favorite food was broccoli, which ignited debate and skepticism as the President had previously been quoted saying various other foods were his "favorite." But now PETA is pouncing on this pro-broccoli moment by releasing the above t-shirt, promoting Obama's love of the green veggie with the absurd image of a broccoli stalk growing out of his head. What you may not realize is that the cruciferous veggie has been a hot-button issue for several previous presidents, as the WSJ notes here, beginning with George H.W. Bush. Maybe suspected Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton will usher in the "kale era" in 2016.

San Francisco chef Chris Cosentino spends a fair amount of time dreaming up cool apparel with names like Gluttony Pants and Meat Feet, but his latest design supports a cause that's near and dear to his heart. A new T-shirt collaboration with Flavour Gallery bears the slogan, "Harden the fork up," with a portion of proceeds donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in support of the organization's research of Parkinson's Disease. Cosentino, whose uncle suffered from Parkinson's, donated $282,000 to MJFF earlier this year after winning Bravo's Top Chef Masters competition.

Desserts Just Like Mom Used to Make at Rickshaw Republic

There is little arguing that food made by a mom just taste better. They know how to add the right amount of love accentuated with a hint of guilt tripping. This summer at Rickshaw Republic, mom is on the menu – not literally. The Indonesian restaurant will feature guest moms’ takes on traditional Indonesian pastries. Dining in Chicago reports that the idea came to owner Oscar Setiawan because of his passion for collaboration and sharing his family’s cuisine.

Friends and moms of friends close to Setiawan will prepare one or two pastries at the restaurant using ingredients sourced from Asian markets. These include risoles, pastries filled with béchamel, chicken, carrot, and celery as well as dadar gulung, coconut pancake rolls. A different mom and her pastries will be featured each week though August. Don’t worry, the only guilt experienced as a result of these treats is from the calories.

West Virginia Slaw Dog is Hot Diggity’s Hot Dog of the Month

South Street frank fortress Hot Diggity does a different special each month, and we can vouch for the deliciousness of July’s offering. The Traditional West Virginia Slaw dog sees the hot dog smothered by housemade chili and creamy sweet slaw, with a squiggle of mustard acros the top. We tried it at Hot Diggity University and it was our favorite of the bunch, a great combo of textures, temperatures and flavors. It’s National Hot Dog Month, so do your duty and get over to try one ($5.50; 267-886-9253).

Confusing Restaurant Names: Luksus Opens in Greenpoint, But Can You Get a Haircut?

Trend alert! Well, not a trend per se, but there have been a few double-naming situations around town that may cause folks to be confused about what tables they're booking. While it's nearly impossible to get a last minute table at Nomad in the eponymous Flatiron Hotel, you can surely walk in and grab a spot at the North African restaurant of the same name. Carbone is a new hot spot in the West Village, but even seasoned vet Gael Greene got confused when she accidentally booked a table at the other Carbone on West 38th Street.

Now, high-end Luksus has opened in Greenpoint, but don't be surprised if you try to call and are greeted by the question: "cut or trim." The eatery, located in the back of Torst, shares a name with neighboring hair salon Luksus Inc, located a few doors down at 621 Manhattan Avenue (for the record, their number is 718-389-2525). Apparently the name is spelled the same way in Polish and Swedish.

Bizarre Bites: Taste Testing Pizza Topped With Ice Cream

You think pineapple is a weird pizza topping? Think again. Philadelphia's Pizza Brain, which serves as the world's only museum dedicated to pizza culture (yes, they have a Noid) dishes out plenty of standard (and supremely tasty) pies, but it's an off-the-menu item that caught our attention for this Bizarre Bites segment.

Behold the Frankford Avenue Taco, a slice of the spot's thin crust pizza topped with three mini scoops of pizza ice cream from the neighboring Little Baby's ice cream shop. Conceived by a tipsy patron one night, the purposely silly item may be the strangest slice you've ever had, but was it any good? Watch the segment to find out, and subscribe to our YouTube page for more Bizarre Bites:
