The fried chicken plate at Miss Ollie's
Fans of Barbados-born chef Sarah Kirnon (formerly of the Front Porch and Hibiscus) have willingly followed her throughout the Bay Area for her signature fried chicken and you’ll find just that along with other tasty affordable Caribbean-inspired staples at Miss Ollie's, her new counter-service café in the Swan’s Market in Old Oakland, where it joins neighbors Cosecha and the forthcoming Rosamunde (slated to open in about a month or two). Initially, the venue, which is inspired by the one-stop-shops of the West Indies, is only open during the day, offering a different lunch plate special daily along with a few a la carte items such as Creole ham, salty fish with akee and sides such as plantains, greens and peas and rice. The weekly specials at the moment are Tuesday fried chicken, Wednesday curry goat, Thursday oxtail and Friday fried fish.

The sunny storefront is filled with colorful paintings, piped-in Haitian music and communal picnic tables and counter seating, where guests can kick back and sip glasses of non-alcoholic ginger brew and ruby-tinged hibiscus punch (their liquor license is pending). Plans to open on the weekend and for dinner service are in the works for January.

Miss Ollie's: 901 Washington St, Oakland, 510-385-6188, open Tuesday- Friday from 11:30 AM-2:30 PM
