One trend that hasn’t quite hit the Bay Area (yet) is the resurgence of the meatball. If you’re curious what all the fuss is about, head to Oakland tonight where the owners of New York City’s famed
The Meatball Shop will be popping up at former kitchen mate Kyle Itani’s new Uptown eatery
Hopscotch. Itani just nabbed
three stars for his Japanese-inspired diner food from Chronicle reviewer Michael Bauer, but tonight it’s all about meatballs (served “naked", as shown above, or in nestled into heroes), along with sides such as rigatoni, polenta and salad, at his San Pablo Ave perch. It’s certain to be a bit of a mob scene, with a first-come, first-serve line from 5 PM- midnight, but the crew will be doling out PBR, wine and their signature boozy Fool-Aid rum punch to stave off the wait.
