Beer, tacos and murals at Village Tavern
Palms has two new restaurants, both of which have opened within a few days of each other. According to Eater, The Doughroom, a new mostly Italian joint from Kaveh Karimi (Santa Monica Pizza Kitchen) opened this week. With chefs DJ Olsen (Lou, Black Cat) and Eddie Hah (8 oz. Burger Bar) in the kitchen, the menu skews towards rustic, American comfort food - spaghetti and meatballs, corned beef and gnocchi hash, "clam chowder" pizza - with beers and some wines on tap (3409 Overland Ave.; 424-258-6194).

In the former Chego space, Phorage is a newcomer for pho, Imperial rolls, banh mi and more - here's the current soft-opening menu - from chef Perry Cheung (ROC Kitchen, Slanted Door). The room is mostly transformed, albeit just more white, less color, but still only a few wooden-topped tables and a counter. Current hours are 11:30 AM-2:30 PM and 6-9:30 PM, but Cheung and his partners plan to open later on the weekends (3300 Overland Ave.; 310-555-5555).

Nearby in Mar Vista, Louie's debuted, a bar with bold food, marble-topped tables and whiskey. Chef and owner John Atkinson, from Manhattan Beach's North End Cafe (a Diners, Drive-Ins and Divesalum), creates things like Kalua Pig Monte Cristo Eggroll (with "bang bang" sauce...a guy after Guy Fieri's own heart), togarashi bacon fries, pimento cheeseburgers and chicken pate paninis. Louie's is open Tuesday through Sunday, 5 PM to midnight [UD] (3817 Grand View Blvd.; 310-915-5300).

And across town, Atwater Village Tavern is now slinging Mexican food from the Guac 'n Roll truck and a varied craft brew selection. The space is just a few doors from the ultimate dive bar Club Tee Gee, and has outdoor seating [Eating LA] (3218 Glendale Blvd.; 323-644-0605).
