The group that owns uber-popular Montauk hotel and restaurant,
Surf Lodge, is scouting an outpost for downtown Manhattan. “We are quietly looking,’’admitted Mike Walrath who has been searching along with partner Jayma Cardoso. “It started as a little project, but it is very serious for us. We’d like to do 40 condos, 80 hotel units and 2 restaurants, plus a concert venue.’’ (Willie Nelson and Jimmy Buffet recently performed at the East End mothership, which is packed nightly in the summer, but closes each fall.)
“We looked at the
Flatiron Hotel,’’ reveals Cardoza, who says the Manhattan spot will be “chic, but simple.’’Walrath explains they want the intimacy of a private club, with the vibe of a more public spot. “We could have gone the
Soho House route, but a lot of private places lack the energy of places that are open. We want sophisticated food and nightlife for a curated crowd.’’ The group is also planning Snow Lodge in Park City, Utah.
